Soul work

One day, very early in the morning, I was up before all the others at home and sat on the ground, on the carpet where I used to play with my brothers, somewhere between the dining table and the living room.

Pink Lillies
I was about 5 or 6 years old and sat there, looking at beautiful pink lilies in a vase near the carpet, one big flower bud right in front of my face. And suddenly, right before my eyes wide open of surprise, the flower opened up. Slowly, but steadily. It opened as if it had been waiting for me to say hello.

I will never forget it. It was so beautiful that it was life changing. That day the nature and animal lover in me awakened. It is probably also part of the reason why I founded the Facebook Group "From Petal to Pod".

Before I became light intollerant (lamps of all sorts, sun, electrosmog, etc.) I worked for the International Union for Conservation of Nature. I was happy to do something for my planet, for Mother Nature.

Locked up at home, watching days go by, I felt totally useless. Fortunately, beading prevented me from going nuts, but still... I didn't want to be useless. The question "what can I do to fulfill my soul's unique purpose" remained.

Jane Goodall

Then, earlier this year, I saw this quote by Jane Goodall:
“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
Jane's quote woke me up. It is not necessary to be a super hero. I may be locked up because of my light intollerance, but still can do some things in addition to recycling everything that can be recycled. We all love Mother Nature, but often we don't know what to do to help her. The answer is: help those who help Mother Nature. I thought: I can bead, bead as only I can bead and sell what I make to raise funds.

So here is the result: a beaded sculpture / pendant / toy to raise funds. The proceeds will go to the Jane Goodall Institute. http://www.janegoodall.org/. It is listed in my Etsy shop and entered in the Etsy Beadweavers' Team Challenge of September, which theme is "Our Wonderful World". Because our world, our planet, IS wonderful and worth every effort, small and big.

I also designed a little bumblebee to raise funds for Planet Bee. Because bees are dying worldwide at an worrying pace, and even though most countries have their food and drug security agencies who worry about bees, it is important that other organizations and foundations spread their knowledge and focus on subjects which are often not taken into consideration by governmental agencies.

The Perfect Present

When I learned that the theme of the Etsy Beadweaver's Team Challenge of November was  "The Perfect Present", I immediately knew what I wanted to make. You can see the listing here.

Years ago, my dearest friend Isabelle gave me a small vermeil Hamsha hand, to protect me, as she said. I think that she is the only person who has ever given me something protective, but that comes from the absence of supersition of my other beloved ones.
Click for a larger image - the Hamsha
hand in this photo is the one I received
from Isabelle
I wasn't superstitious myself, and didn't realize how adorable it was to receive (or give) an amulet, or talisman until she gave it to me. Since that day, I consider "Evil eyes" which actually symbolizes the eye watching out for evil, Hamsha hands (God's hand), Maneki Neko (lucky cats) and many other little beads and charms as Perfect Gifts. Small objects, durable representatives of the loving attention and affection from one person for another. It doesn't matter that you believe it or not, what matters is the intention. "Be well, stay safe". It is kindness, friendship, love, dedication. Symbols are the result of culture, and culture is the result of thousands of years of human evolution. Some symbols have an incredibly deep meaning.

The Evil Eye in this beaded component is a rare vintage Venetian glass cabachon, which I received from the adorable Ruth Buffington. She sent it to me along with other beautiful beads and cabachons within the framework of the January 2013 PIF which went viral on Facebook - a lovely action where one commits to send a gift to 5 persons who, in return, simply must pay it forward. Ruth is a very talented beader and seamstress extraordinaire. You certainly will like to discover Ruth's works for this year's Steampunk exhibit at the Lyam & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfiel History, 3 exceptional costumes with incredible beadwork and beaded accessories, are amazing.

Click for a larger image to read Nesli's note
I ordered 22Kt matte gold-plated Hamsha charms to match the cabachon, little coin charms (also symbol of good fortune) together with a few other items from an Etsy shop in Turkey, TukishEyeSupply. The owner, Nesli, sent more than just the items I ordered. She added a little bag full of goodies plus a 'real' Evil Eye bead, with a note saying:

"This is a Nazar Boncuk (Evil Eye) handmade by Turkish Artisans.
For thousands of year it is believed to be protective. I hope it will protect you and brings you good luck too..."

I don't know Nesli personally, and feel very  grateful.

The cabachon is glued on Lacy Stiff Stuff, backed with turquoise leather. I made a butterfly rope structure around the cabachon. The oval peyote structure is supple. It makes the component cup nicely, which is practical for the chain to pass behind. I used beautiful materials - 24Kt Gold plated Delicas, Goldplated Firepolished rounds and Permanent Finish gold Toho seed beads for extra durability.

For my beaded pendant I initially planned to make a long Butterfly rope, but Debra's lovely Seed Bead Chain pattern (available for free in her Craftsy Store) is matching this project even better, in particular when worn on the hand.

There are two chains for this item: to wear it as a bracelet (34cm chain for a 71/4 inch wrist) or as a hand adornment with the longer chain (38cm). The two chains together make a 72cm long chain to wear the component as a pendant.

The tiny little coins are fantastic little 'helpers' to attach the clasp.

Please let me know what you think!

Spring fever

Little Thumb
It is Spring, I am busy as a bee. It seems to me that I'm most active during this season. It might come from the awakening of nature, the smell of the ground, the beautiful weather, the light. I might be light-intollerant, it doesn't mean that I like darkness. As long as I can remain in the shade of the building where I live, it is ok. I can't wait to bead on the balcony again.

Little Red Hood
This year Spring is much nicer than the past 2 - 3 years. My Hortensia is growing a bit too fast, but that's often the case on a balcony. My bamboo is a bit thirsty, because I was reluctant to water it, fearing that it would freeze, which generally happens in March. But this year it was nice nearly the entire month. It's not a big issue - it grows like grass... (which is normal, because it's the same family). April is nice too, the temperature is lovely. The heating doesn't even function here in the flat...

Hyper Eddie hasn't left and it's nice, because I am really having fun with beads. There are 3 new files with pictures on my computer, Fairy Figurines, Creepy Creatures and Jeannie.

'I dream of Jeannie' Barbie
As part of the Facebook Group Bead Dollie, I wanted to follow Diane Hyde's advice "Play around and just make something quick, little, and fun." So I made a Little Thumb - because I've always wanted to make little boots based on my Calla Lily flowers. The little figurine shows the moment when Tom puts the fairy boots on and they adapt to his size progressively. A little Red Hoot soon joined him. I have started a 3rd character of the 17th-Century writer Charles Perrault. This is really fun!

Tiny tulips - "Oranje Boven"
For an informal challenge to make clothes for Barbies within the framework of Contemporary Geometric beadwork, I made a bellydancer outfit for the doll Kate McKinnon sent too me. The bustier is the first thing I wanted to make with the pear cup shapes of Gerlinde's Monte Carlo bracelet. You may already have seen the Monte Carlo pattern I wrote in collaboration with her; well this little bracelet has opened a breach in my imagination.
Little Angler fish
I made little orange tulips for the very first King's Day in the Netherlands - until todayDutch National Holiday was Queen's day, but now there is a king...

I also made a tiny Angler fish based on the peyote structure and a 3rd "Creepy creature" is already in the make.

And all this while continuing writing tutorials for you. Today, I am really proud to announce that the 2 tutorials to make your very own "Souls" necklace and/or ring and earrings (or both patterns together) are now available in my Etsy Shop. This was a labour of love when I made it for the Battle of the Beadsmith back in 2013, but also writing the tutorial was not the easiest thing. It was nearly as hard to explain how to make it than to make it. I hope that you will be as happy with yours as I am with mine.

Souls
Last but not least, at Contemporary Geometric Beadwork the editorial work of the Edit team (which I'm part of) has started.
Did I say that I'm as busy as a bee somewhere?

SamohtaC Etsy-B-Day

Tomorrow my Etsy Shop SamohtaC will be one year old. It's been a lot of work and learning and love and I am very grateful to all those of you who encouraged me, inspired me and who bought/buy my little patterns. You make my life better! Thank you so much for choosing my designs, for liking them, sharing them, favoriting them, and adding them to treasury lists.

You are wonderful. I hope that our walk (or dance?) on the beady roads, together, will last many more years.

Tomorrow, to celebrate the Birthday and to thank you, you can use the following coupon code to get 25% off of your order:

Happy Beading! and much love!

and just because this made me smile out loud and the colors match my blog so well:

'T is the time of year...

I wanted to send a newsletter to you all, but it seems to be illegal to do that (spam) without asking your permission. So if you would like to receive the kind of information as contained in this post, sign up in the little form on the left of this page - the star is the field for the e-mail, the two other fields are for your first and last name.

First of all, I would like to inform you that I updated the pattern for the 3D shapes "Pepper, Fork and Yukka Flower". If you purchased it from me in the past, please convo me to let me know if you want the updated version for this. I will send it to you by e-mail.

next... lots of nice things to know!

'T is the time of year... to look back at 2013 and give thanks.

I opened my Etsy shop in March, the first day of Spring, and sold 200 patterns! Many thanks to all for your support!
Mandala Beaded Beads by Datz Katz
One of the patterns was a fundraiser for my friend Debra from DatzKatz, it is not available in my shop anymore, but in hers, you will find her lovely Mandala Beaded Bead, together with other very nice and beautiful things.

A few listings have expired and instead of relisting them, I am planning to make a little booklet, mainly the botanical designs. I would love to know what you think about this.

'T is the time of year to offer yourself a treat!

Today, I listed the Ishtar Collar Pattern, 34 pages plus cover and back, with extremely detailed illustrations and instructions, lots of hints and advice. Ishtar Collar is very pleasant to bead, you won't want to put the needle down.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/173283404/ishtar-collar-pattern-only-direct?
Ishtar Collar - Honey Topaz
Marca Smit from DiMarca-Online teamed up with me to make kits available at a reasonable price.

You can choose 3 color variations:
- Honey/Topaz
- Malachite Green/Gold
- Silver/Gray/Black

The kit comes in a fancy frosted plastic wallet and contains the most beautiful Delicas and Tilas, with yummie metallic or gold luster finishes, and of course lovely little dangling drops, thread, needles and ribbon, everything you need to make your own beautiful collar.

You can choose to buy the kit with electronic or in paper pattern, or without - in case you have already purchased the electronic pattern from me.

'T is the time of year to gather together.

Rick Rack graph for tall peaks
We can get together anytime, but the past month, cool Contemporary Geometric Beaders contributed to a survey about Rick Rack bangle Sizes.
Thanks to their generous contribution, I could finalize the Rick Rack Graphs, a 15-page 'bundle' with detailed information and graph paper for you to colour in.
I will let you know on Facebook when it will be available. I am also offering the flags and pennants patterns for free to the Contemporary Geometric Beadwork web blog for all the subscribers to use.

'T is the time of year to offer a little present to those who count, which you do.

Ayatee
As a Christmas gift I have written a short tutorial for a simple,  pretty bracelet using superduos (Twin beads) and Czechmates Lentil beads. It is called Ayatee and you may download the free pattern here. Let me know what you think of it, send me your pictures!

Don't miss the special sale in my Etsy Shop, 2 patterns for 1, which remains valid until 31 December 2013. You may also convo me to offer your complimentary pattern to a friend.

My very best wishes for a peaceful, joyful time of year.

I know how to swim, but not endlessly

My balcony in the summer
It might not seem so, but over the past months, I really didn't feel well. It all started with the return of the cold, end of August. I wanted to profit from my balcony a little bit more, because this year... well this year the heaters were on until the beginning of July and Summer lasted exactly 7 weeks. Unbelievable.

They did not put the heaters on very quickly, of course not... This resulted in cystitis (and a bad cold later on), and I needed to have antibiotics. When she delivered the antibiotics, the pharmacist said that I had to interrupt 2 medications, due to interactions. One of the two is for fibro and -I have to admit that now- mental stability. The pharmacist had already warned me in the past that it could affect the heartbeat, but I decided to rely on my doctors, who never said anything about that. But yes, my heartbeat had changed (I felt scary 'blobs'). During that one week of antibiotics without my other medics I felt ok, so I decided to not take them for a while.

In the meantime, my adorable physiotherapist said that I seemed to loose my inner light and that I should talk about it with my doctor.

Which I did, a tiny bit later than reasonable.

To make a long story short: I saw plenty of doctors and had to make plenty of phone calls and became really, really depressed.

I love the view from my window.
Since yesterday there are ice flowers
on my favorite tree.
Someone suggested that it might be seasonal depression. Well, that for sure is not the problem. Not at all. I love Fall and Winter. I'd say that seasonal depression happens to me when it is still cold in June :) June should be nice, right?

According to the cardiologist everything is fine. I'm glad that I finally have that important medication back, since last Friday. I can feel the difference already. Hurray!

There is hope here. However, it was a shock to realize that beads and positive attitude weren't sufficient to remain balanced... I didn't even like beading anymore, and that felt so very wrong.

It is like swimming in the middle of the lake or sea. You've learned to swim but you cannot swim continuously. Plus, the water is cold.  The strength or power to keep on swimming and breathing weakens more and more... You need to have something to hold on to keep your head out of the water (or find a way to the shore). Happy to have the buoy back!

I am very very grateful for the wonderful support many of you have shown on Facebook when I wrote about this. Much gratitude and love to you all. You rock!

Now, I feel that I'm coming back. Suddenly I succeeded to finish the graphs for the Rick Racks for Contemporary Geometric Beadwork (in the process of being reviewed) as well as my patterns for  Ishtar Collar KITS. Yes, KITS!! This will be the subject of another blog post - suspense suspense!

For now, I want to celebrate with you that my heart is ok, and that I can take the much needed medication again. And with Christmas at our door, let's have a special

This is how it works: buy one pattern and write to me in the comments box which other pattern you wish to receive. I will send it to you via e-mail. Do not put the second pattern in your cart.

You can choose a pattern of a lower or identic value as the one you purchase in my Etsy Shop.

This is valid until the end of December 31, 2013 on all patterns listed in my Etsy Shop.

Geometric Horned Rick Rack Bracelets make fantastic 'Landscape' cuffs

Pompom (Petal) Pendant
As I wrote in a previous post, my Battle of the Beadsmith piece 'Souls' leaves me a little bit "empty", as if it was the most important thing to say, the ultimate piece.
I am happy with this pause - it made me look back at the things I made over the past months (and even years) with satisfaction. I realize that it's been a pretty busy Spring, even if, strangely, it does not feel so.
I updated my website today, because since Esmeralda's bag, I hadn't posted new pictures and I feel a bit ashamed - about 10 pictures were missing, mainly my petal and flower shapes for which I've written patterns.

Nautical Warped Squares
More patterns will be available soon in my Etsy Shop, where you can also find the pattern for the warped square Nautical Flags (the alphabet and the numbers 0 - 9), as well as a pattern for 10 little pennants, made with oblong triangles for the numbers 0 to 10. Oblong triangles make lovely earrings.

The warped squares were inspired by a beautiful necklace in the book Contemporary Geometric Beadwork Vol. I by Kate McKinnon. This book is heavily inspiring - I wrote about it already here. I think that the after-battle pause is perfect for me to make things designed by other talented people - things I wanted to make but my own 'beading god' always had priority. I have tons of favorites.

Gabriella van Diepen's "The Devil's
Eggs Are Hatching"
When I saw Gabriella van Diepen's Horned Rick-Rack bracelet called The Devil's eggs are hatching in CGB I, I loved it hard. And I fell in love as hard with Maria Cristina Grifone's incredible Landscape 'Rick-Rack' which looks like an island in the ocean with trees and cliffs...

Generally I don't make beaded jewelry or objects designed by other beaders, but the beauties in this book are simply impossible to resist.
I love the shape and love the idea of painting a landscape accented by 3D mountains.

Landscape Horned Rick-Rack
by Maria Cristina Grifone
The difference between Gabriella's cuff and the landscape cuff is that the latter has horns built on the herringbone ribs, whilst Gabriella's bracelet has horns between those ribs, for a perfect organic look...

Voici my very own landscape cuff, Moon Rising over Kings Valley, where Gabriella's shape merges with Maria Cristina's landscape idea. The result pleases me tremendously. It was not easy and it took me more than a week (I made many mistakes due to fibromyalgia and my arms hurt easily... I need to rest them after beading), but I think that I will make another landscape cuff very soon.

I am waiting for Egyptian charms to arrive in my mail box for embellishment, but they seem to be lost somewhere between California and here.

Tell me what you think about landscape cuffs and geometric beadwork.

Moon Rising over Kings Valley

If you don't understand what I am talking about in this post, it might be possible that you don't have Contemporary Geometric Beadwork, vol. I! Get yours! You will love it. It's a must.

Being true to myself.

Yesterday there was a fabulous surprise in my mailbox from Laura Irenze: a very beautiful colorful flower. It is so beautiful with the opal-like stone in the center and the rainbow colors, I like it more than my own flowers. It adorns my summer hat already. Color becomes more and more vital in my life.

I also received beautiful cabochons and beads from Ruth Buffington. Boy am I spoiled. Look at those fabulous vintage cabs and seed beads!

Laura and Ruth's gifts are Pay It Forward gifts. I am so very grateful!!!

Fingers crossed
I finished my Battle of the Beadsmith 2013 piece. I am really happy with the result. It tells something; and exactly what I wanted it to tell... It will be a nightmare to make decent photos of it. Which is pretty often the case with pieces I make, especially when I use memory wire... I wish I could afford a professional shooting session and have it worn by a beautiful young model...

For the model I have an idea. Fingers crossed.

It might not seem to be a particularly difficult piece, (which is also the case of most of my difficult pieces), but I lost my temper several times when adding the chain. It's not because I don't take myself too seriously as a contestant, that I didn't get totally mad at the beads and chain and thread when things got really complicated...
Luckily more than 3/4 of the piece went really well.

But the last quarter has left me a bit exhausted.

Other projects are impatiently waiting for my hands and head to have time. I am in a beaded-flower-period. I need to write patterns. Continue the project I call 'Spoutnik' (probably too late for FMG's beading contest)... Update my Etsy shop to offer Instant Digital Download. Upload pictures of my last creations onto my website. Prepare gifts and PIFs and write lovely cards and letters and send them... I nearly feel stressed. I'm in some kind of grey zone between "I want to make/do this" and "I must make/do this", which could eventually lead to "I don't want to make/ do this." Gosh. Do I need a Holiday from my beads? Do I want too much? Because, yeah, I really want to do all this, but time seems to slip through my fingers faster than ever before.

Where does this feeling come from? Or is it a state of mind?
Image: Mirall Lifestyle on Facebook
Is the Mighty Mind taking the lead too much? Well, if it does, meditation should help with that. In addition, my feeling is that I need what Andy Puddicombe calls "Headspace". But then again, to get that (there), I also should meditate. 10 minutes per day are supposedly enough.

...

I seem to never find time to meditate.
Time...

I realized that I need a little help to step out of the viscious circle... and I think that I've found it.

Yesterday's first 10-minute session of Andy's free "Take 10" changed something in me. I can feel it already, because while writing this post, this happened in my little head:

"Too many things to do? Wait Mister Mind, I do what I can and... I have time! Don't stress me!"

Thank you Andy Puddicombe. I am looking forward to the next session and feeling better soon!

Beautiful artwork by Lori Portka on Etsy.

I found this pretty picture on Etsy and love the serenity coming out from it. It's not the picture that I want, though; I simply hope to be like the girl in the picture.

I love the Internet and Facebook - follow me there

I love the Internet and Facebook. Much controversy about it, but I love it. Being a photophobic girl who simply can't have activities outside (sun). No restaurants, dancing or cinema (spot light, etc.) or hobby or sport (neon light everywhere). So Facebook somewho is my playground, my club, my meeting room.

It is nearly the only place where I actually CAN meet with people. Of course I sometimes see a smiling face at the clinic or in a Doctor's waiting room... Real contact is priceless.

The beading friends I've met there might not be persons I've met in person, they nevertheless are real persons, and they really are friends. They are really special, they share their feelings, they respect each other and they love one another. I think that it is KINDNESS. Yes kindness.

Buying clothes, and sometimes other items, online is a salvation. Before I understood that it was the light that made me feel so bad, I always went completely mad when trying things on in tiny changing rooms with light bulbs all around the mirror. Hurray. I don't need to do that anymore.

SamohtaC on Facebook
I am thankful for genius Tim Berners-Lee and the CERN. Tim and CERN still stuck to the idea that free sharing of technology for the good
of humankind is normal, they want the Internet to remain free for all. My husband contributed to it with his discovery of what he calls "phantom lines in telephone connections". That was the time things were still done without bothering who got the credits. The time Swissair was a big company of 40'000 employees around the world all working with one intranet... No patent on the Internet, it is already everybody's. And it must remain so.

Follow me on my Samohtac FB Page where I post news about my latest creations and patterns.

I also share free patterns there.

And you, do you share?

Jump and Joy start with the same letter.

So much awe... I have the feeling that the Universe pushes me. To do it. Just do it. So I did it. I went for it. Let's look back:

One kilo of Czech Glass beads
Last month -February- I received the amazing gift of ONE KILO of 'Beads for Blogpost' from the fabulous glass beads manufacturer Preciosa Ornella and I jumped of joy. The colors are beautiful and the beads simply lovely. I have worked with their beads since I started beading and I am working on lovely new designs.

Fire Mountain Gems - one of my favorite suppliers in the USA, every week showcases the "Favorite Design of the Week" on their Facebook page and my little Amulet Pendant was the most liked design of the 3rd week of the month. I am very thankful!

Onye's beautiful earrings and doodles
I have decided to participate in the Battle of the Beadsmith 2013 to be part of the fun... I don't really know what I will bead but I will battle joyfully!

I've also won a pair of earrings made by the adorable Onye Obama-Ndika because I happened to be the 200th person to 'like' her page on Facebook. I love them, tanzanite is one of my favorite colors and it likes me too! She also added two hand-made Doodle sticker, which I like very much too.

March is even more incredible! I don't know what to start with first!
CGB Vol. II

Kate McKinnon's delightful book Contemporary Geometric Beadwork, to which I have contributed with my Jalisco Bangle and as a member of the 'Edit Team', has safely arrived at her home and she has shipped them immediately. My book is on it's way to me and it is delightful to be looking forward to having my hands on this treasure! Those who have received the book are reportedly glad with it and this also makes me happy.

Did you know that a second volume is coming? And that a fantabulous calendar with lovely people modelling marvellous beadwork is also available? What, you haven't ordered CGB vol. I??? You don't know what you are missing!

My Esmeralda's Boho Bag has received a wave of positive comments, and one of the greatest beaders in the world, whom I admire beyond limits, has featured it in her "Artisan Colorway" Series 2013. I'm talking about the extraordinary Eva Maria Keiser. She is extremely talented, and she is most generous: not only does she showcase the work of other beaders, she also offers marvellous patterns for free!

Back from the
Fragrance Garden
Fire Mountain Gems (again! wow!) featured my little earrings on their Facebook page last Monday and, well, wow, there were so many other beaders liking it and sharing it, I was very overwhelmed. This pair was made to match the necklace "Back from the Fragrance Garden" which won a bronze medal in their 2007 Contest.

And the awe goes crescendo:
My wonderful physiotherapist who takes care of me since a few years asked me to do a specific exercice in the swimming pool last week and - hurray!! -  this un-blocked my back naturally. I could cry of happiness. I jumped of happiness (in the water of course). I have my balance back on my left foot! I can sit upright normally - not as if I had a necklace of a ton around my neck anymore. Beading seems to have become more easy (even though I still have Fibromyalgia and light allergy complicating things).

All this is so... well so magical!!!

I've hesitated a long time. The encouragements and the supportive comments from many fellow beaders really made me feel strong and confident, and so

I opened my Etsy Store yesterday! First day of Spring! A new adventure has started!

Spring means 'Jump' in Dutch. I don't want to stop this. I might jump carefully in the swimming pool (where the water bears my weight), but most of all, I'll let my heart jump of joy in my chest when I'll sell a pattern from my shop!

There are already 4 patterns available. And to celebrate the opening, the tutorial "Mokuren" is available for only 15 US$ (instead of 25 US$).

I am working hard on new patterns, and will post more very soon! I also hope to have the automatic download feature soon!
